Hector Maldonado was nearly out of time.
The Sam Rayburn High School senior had spent months on his Western-themed colored-pencil drawing, including a few nights in December when he worked on it until 3 or 4 in the morning before dragging himself out of bed for school.
He didn’t really think he had a shot of winning the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s annual school art competition, which draws more than 200,000 entries each year from across Texas. But his parents had always taught him to try his best.
