According to the U.S. Office of Management & Budget (OMB), Houston is now named the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands Metropolitan Statistical Area, solidifying the city of Pasadena's stature as a major economic driver in the region.

According to Chief Economist & SVP at the Greater Houston Partnership, Patrick Jankowski, “the criteria to be a ‘named-city’ depends on the number of ‘jobs located in a city.' If the number of jobs (i.e., employment opportunities) exceeds the number of job holders, then that city is an economic engine for the region and included in the name.”

According to the federal office, “OMB establishes and maintains the delineations of Core Based Statistical Areas solely for statistical purposes. This classification is intended to provide nationally consistent delineations for collecting, tabulating, and publishing Federal statistics for a set of geographical areas.”
