The mission of the Pasadena Economic Development Corporation (PEDC) is to drive creation, retention, and investment of local resources while improving the quality of life for current and future residents. Here is a breakdown of how PEDC continues to power Pasadena’s plethora of possibilities.
What Is Economic Development?
The U. S. Economic Development Administration defines economic development as, “... [creating] the conditions for economic growth and improved quality of life by expanding the capacity of individuals, firms, and communities to maximize the use of their talents and skills to support innovation, lower transaction costs, and responsibly produce and trade valuable goods and services.”
With Pasadena being the second-largest city in the Greater Houston Metro Area and home to the country’s largest petrochemical complex, PEDC is working to expand the city’s economic footprint in other industries. Having direct access to all forms of transportation (planes, trains, automobiles, ships, and aerospace manufacturing) makes the city a prime location for the logistics and aeronautics industries. With the bulk of the adult population ranging in ages from 20 to 29, the workforce is overflowing with potential and determination for the success of additional industries like professional services, technology, energy, healthcare, retail, and more. Diversifying economic opportunities multiplies workforce options, thus stabilizing and securing Pasadena’s future.
PEDC’s Primary Strategies
In PEDC’s Strategic Plan, there are six areas of focus grouped into three primary strategies of approach that anchor Pasadena’s growth and diversification.
Business Retention & Expansion (BRE)
Pasadena is home to close to 5k small businesses with PEDC acting as an ally. PEDC offers the Facade Forward Grant, the SizeUp Business Intelligence Tool, and the Pasadena Loves Local program to help each business review data, access resources, and increase marketability to thrive and stay in Pasadena.
Business Recruitment
The number one rule of real estate is “location, location, location,” and Pasadena offers location advantages by being at the nexus of all major transportation modes. PEDC serves as a “first stop” for developers and site selectors looking for a new address. By highlighting the city’s proximity to the Houston Ship Channel, Bayport Terminal, Hobby Airport, Ellington Airport, three freeway systems, and two railroad systems, PEDC is able to attract new capital investment that creates well-paying jobs.
Infrastructure & Quality of Life
Because economic development is also about people, PEDC invests in projects that make Pasadena better for all residents. While construction may be a pain during the process, once completed, the residents reap the rewards of more jobs, community events, beautification efforts, and increased pride in calling Pasadena home.
